As the new year rolled in I began to think about resolutions and what did I need to do for myself in the next year. I also went to the mailbox and opened a box containing the book Never Say Diet by Chantel Hobbs. What timing? In the year prior to moving to Arrow Heights I had lost nearly 50 lbs of weight. In the year that I have spent working at Arrow Heights I have gained all of that weight back. Was it the staff’s initial love for Ron’s Chili Burgers? Could it have been the frequent lunch meetings? Was it the 10-12 hours I spend on a computer each day? Lack of exercise? One glass of water a day? It was all of these reasons and more. I am frequently hearing the words of my former roommate Nick Frary in my ear like a ghost, “Jeremy…do you know what you are doing to your body?” Nick is a personal trainer and I was dumb for not spending more time in his office. Now he is two hours away and I will have to teach these things to myself.

Welcome Chantel Hobbs to my life. Never Say Diet is full of tips that helped her lose more than 200 pounds. Chantel has gone from being 350 pounds to losing 200 pounds and becoming a personal trainer and certified spinning instructor. The book was divided into headings entitled “Decide,” “Act,” and “Live.” Here are some things I have started doing since reading the book:

Wake up earlier in the morning

Eat breakfast

Drink 4 Liters of water a day

Start a food journal

Buy healthier foods

Eat more fruit

Walk more and begin to jog when possible

Eat smaller portion sizes

Some of these are small steps, but I am taking action none the less. One of the quotes that stuck out from the book was in response to the question, “Isn’t healthy food expensive?” Her answer was, “Doctors visits are expensive. Lipitor Prescriptions are expensive. Natural foods like eggs, apples, greens and oatmeal are cheap.” I could relate to this since I had very recently gotten my Lipitor prescription refilled.

The publisher sent me an extra copy of the book to give away to one of my readers. I will randomly pick a winner from someone who writes a posts about their goals this year that links back to this post. Leave a link to your post in the comments on this post and you will be registered for a chance at the book.

I look forward to reading your goals.

I never quite figured out which. They were pretty cool and having a blast hanging out. If you have never eaten at 5 and Diner you have to go. I highly recommend the onion straws and chicken fried steak. Yummy.

I have had lunch meetings the last two days with local church leaders to discuss upcoming projects. Yesterday I met with Aaron who works at two local church, I don’t know how he does it. We are working on ShareFest Tulsa together. We have been put in charge of the web site. Aaron and the churches he is working for are doing some pretty interesting things and going through some of the same difficulties and transitions that we are seeing here at Arrow Heights, but they are several steps ahead of us. It will be interesting to watch what happens and see what we can learn from their process.

I had lunch today at China Star on Aspen and 71st with Woody from Ranch Acres Baptist Church in Tulsa. They are needing some help with a video project and after talking to them I may help them with their web site and their online outreach efforts.

God has been putting people in my path this week and showing me how my ministry can help influence and equip other churches. I am interested in seeing where this leads me and how I can further helps local churches with media and outreach. And I love a free lunch. Keep praying for the leadership ministries of Arrow Heights and that God would use us the help other churches connect with the people outside their doors.

After church every Sunday we go over to the home of one the members of our small group and eat. Yesterday we went over to the Lusk home and ate like kings. I always eat too much when we go over to their house. I love the fact that we eat together as a group and that we eat in someone’s house versus going to eat at a restaurant. I got to thinking about this last year. We wonder why some people don’t go to church on Sunday, but we expect them to be ready to seat me for lunch. Would more people be going to church if we simply at at home on Sunday. I know that we have had several students in our ministry drop out because they start working and can’t get off on Sunday. What are your thoughts on this?

I think that I have really big bones. I weigh as much as some of the contestants on this season’s show, but Syd and I are in agreement that my body doesn’t look anything like these guys on the show. I think it must be my heart of gold that is weighing me down. Ha Ha Ha.
