Chemistry is Important

My new favorite show is Top Gear on BBCA. I just discovered this show a few months ago. I am not sure how these guys got the job but I definitely want in. What I find most appealing about the show is not so much the cars as it is the friendship and bonds that these 3 guys have…ok… that and they usually end up blowing something up or trashing a car for fun. If you compare this original draft of Top Gear with the new American version on the History Channel you can really tell the difference that the right chemistry can make within a team. I am not sure how you cast for a show like Top Gear and to be honest I am completely at a loss for how you cast for a person like James May, but these guys create a buddy show that you completely enjoy. How do they do it? I am not for sure, but I do think that there is tremendous value in your team trying to work at finding a sweet spot between performance and fun. That is certainly one of the things that Top Gear has found and I believe one of the things that many environments are missing. I have worked in so many environments that were dull and stale because the people working within them never found an outlet for them to let loose. Harrah Church is a lot like Top Gear in the sense that we are able to let loose with our services, with the way we do ministry, with just about our whole approach to anything we are doing. It is isn’t illegal or unbiblical…let’s give it a try. I love to see Justin and the band try to take the worship somewhere they haven’t been before. There is just something magical about that. You love it when the singer goes for a note at the top of their range. Even if they just barely get there it can be incredibly inspiring to everyone. That in a sense is a worshipper giving everything he has and leaving nothing on the field. Do we fail sometimes? Heck yeah! But we had a heck of a time getting there.

How important do you think chemistry is to your teams that you work with? How are you trying to make it happen? Do you take chances? Do you let others watch and do you laugh at your mistakes? So much to think about when trying to get the chemistry right, but trust me, when you get it right, the littlest acts can have the best reactions.

Heroes Starts Tonight

I am watching Peggy Olson on Mad Men going through a church committee meeting. They totally nailed what it is like sometimes as a creative. Did anyone out there see the episode?

I have noticed that there has been a lot of programming on AMC that is not what I would call American Movie Classics. Two of their current favorites are Road House and anything by Chuck Norris. At no point in my mind do this movies qualify as an American classic.

So how would you define an American Movie Classic?

Mad Men Starts Tonight

I am really excited about the first episode of Season 2 of Mad Men tonight on AMC. I just started getting into Mad Men a Few Weeks ago when I noticed that the lead character Don Draper looks like my brother Chuck. I am getting a picture of Chuck together to do a side by side for you guys.

Mad Men is about marketing executives in the 1960s on Madison Avenue. This time capsule shows what this era looked like in the workplace for men, women, and people of color. We also peer into the machine of selling to the masses. It is interesting to find a character like Don who is so flawed relationally, but still has such amazing insights into how we tick and what we will respond to. Can’t wait to see what happens tonight.

Jesus in China

Sydnie and I like to watch television on Saturday mornings. It is a way for us relax together. One of our favorite shows is Flip This House, soon to become The Real Deal with Richard Davis. Richard and his crew are funny to watch and really provide great insights into how a team can work together, especially under pressure. There is so much friction within the team sometimes, but they use that fraction as traction to get the job done. I really enjoy their candid personalities.

At the end of this morning’s show Richard talked about how the friendship between his team is more important than they money that they would make. On the show they were about to start making a $10,000 a month payment on a beach house that they were hoping to break even on. You can tell that these guys know how to work hard, but more importantly they know how to play hard.

Have you ever put other things before your relationships with your friends? Do you have relationships in your live that can withstand a little heat and friction? What do you do to play hard with your friends?

Redbox Strikes Again

The Samsung has been working overtime today. I have watched The Invasion, The Brave One, Eastern Promises, and Lost today. Sayid was on killing spree this week. We know that he has gotten off of the island, but what is he doing?

The Invasion was interesting. A zombie film without zombies. Invasion of the Body Snatchers meets War of the Worlds with a Shaun of the Dead ending.

The Brave One was a good film and it had Naveen Andrews from Lost in it. Jodie Foster has definitely developed a pattern for taking roles of a strong female with no romantic interest in the film. She gets close in this one, but Andrews character dies so early in the film. I thought the best thing about the film was Terrence Howard’s character. Howard is a detective investigating the murders perpetrated by Foster’s character. Howard is a great actor with an amazing range.

I just popped Blade Runner into the DVD player. I hope to get it in before Sydnie gets home. She doesn’t really like this genre.

LOST is Back

Four hours of Lost in one week. Yeah baby. I found out tonight that Dan Hobbs and Rich Johnson are both huge Lost fans. Sounds like we need to get a watch party together friends. Anybody else out there watch the show? What are you doing on Thursday nights?

Chuck is Back

I am totally excited. I got home tonight and Sydnie told me that there were two new episodes of Chuck on TV tonight. Yeah boy. The fireplace is roaring, the Salted/Cracked Pepper popcorn is popping, and the TV is glowing.
